Overview

Series 242 Hydraulic Actuators are used in closed loop control to extend or retract and provide displacement or force into a test article. These fatigue-rated actuators incorporate a coaxially mounted transducer for displacement feedback and internal hydraulic cushions for extended service life. Featuring MTS exclusive bearing technology and low pressure seal system, low-friction Series 242 Actuators are ideal for many applications including high-frequency excitation of a test article. Combined with MTS force transducers, servovalves, and swivels, these actuators generate the precision movements and forces required in test and simulation applications.

The MTS DuraGlide 201 Hydraulic Actuator uses the latest technology to create our best single-ended actuator yet.

Improved Data Accuracy

These high-fidelity actuators save time by producing statistically significant results in fewer batches. In a closed-loop system, fidelity is only as good as the weakest link, and a poor performing actuator will add distortion and measurement uncertainty into the system. To maximize performance and produce more accurate results, the MTS DuraGlide 201 actuator incorporates proprietary seal and bearing designs that reduce friction.

Longer Performance Life

The low-friction design uses only 1% of rated load, resulting in smooth operation that reduces wear and extends operating life. The MTS DuraGlide 201 Actuator is also validated through physical testing to more than 100% of rated load, providing dependable performance for longer life. Another way to extend actuator life is to choose the optional SureCoat Rod Finishing Technology to increase service life by 10x over the previous generation actuator.

MTS DuraGlide 244 Hydraulic Actuators are double-ended, fatigue-rated and designed with proprietary materials that minimize friction, while maximizing reliability, wear resistance and ease of maintenance. They are hydraulically-powered pistons that can extend or retract (double-acting) to provide displacement or force into a test article or structure. These actuators are used worldwide in a variety of demanding applications from vehicle dynamics and structural fatigue to component testing, and are recommended for dynamic, static and fatigue applications.

Long Performance Life
MTS DuraGlide 244 Actuators are manufactured with an environmentally friendly, RoHS-compliant, rod surface coating and proprietary surface-finishing processes that set the industry standard for durability, longevity and performance. The MTS SureCoat Rod Finishing Technology increases actuator life expectancy by 10x over actuators with conventionally chrome-plated rods.

Testing Speed and Fidelity
The MTS SureCoat Rod Finishing Technology reduces rod banding by 10x as well. Without having to adjust for rod banding, test engineers can keep the optimal zero stroke position and decrease the need for crosshead position changes that can disturb load train alignment. The ability to retain the zero stroke position over hundreds of millions of punishing cycles, will give more consistent testing results and speed the testing process. In addition, higher fidelity actuators reduce the distortion that can lead to measurement uncertainty and save time by producing statistically significant results in fewer batches.

Energy Efficiency
MTS actuators are engineered to provide maximum performance while introducing the minimal amount of friction into the test system, reducing internal flow losses and heat produced, thus requiring less energy to operate. Minimizing drain flow eliminates the need to use scavenge pumps that negatively aerate oil, further reducing the required energy budget. When these actuators are used with other energy-saving MTS hydraulic products, the cost savings multiply.

One-Piece Design

SWIFT Evo transducers achieve unparalleled measurement accuracy and long life by employing a high-stiffness, one-piece design machined from a forged billet of certified AMS high strength, high toughness aluminum or titanium alloy.

Unique among wheel force transducers, this proven design yields high sensitivity, excellent linear behavior, and high overload capacity. The transducers’ high natural frequency provides phase integrity between measured channels across the operating frequency range.

With no bolted joints, the one-piece design eliminates micro-slippage - the largest contributor to hysteresis - and facilitates efficient heat transfer across the sensor, minimizing temperature differentials in gaged areas.

The one-piece design also minimizes the number of required gages, which enhances transducer reliability and robustness.

A patented MTS flexure isolated shear beam decouples the transducer’s six components of measurement to reduce cross-coupling between measured axes. This increases transducer sensitivity to minute forces and moments and minimizes thermal response.

The one-piece outer ring and shear beam combine to make the SWIFT Evo insensitive to variations in stiffness among wheel rims and road simulator fixtures, facilitating easier integration with both.

SWIFT Evo transducers are testedto SAE J267 and J328 requirements, assuring a long life when properly maintained. Sealed to IP67 standards, they are virtually weather and contaminant proof.

SWIFT Evo transducers are fatigue rated, so the same unit can be deployed on a vehicle at the proving ground for RLDA and then in the lab for both drive file iteration and actual durability testing if desired.

Multi-Axial Calibration

The measurement accuracy of SWIFT Evo transducers is ensured through a multi-axial calibration process provided exclusively by MTS Metrology & Calibration.

While most wheel force transducers are calibrated one channel at a time, SWIFT Evo units are subject to a meticulous, automated process that calibrates the entire transducer, cycling through each channel while exciting all others. This approach enables precise measurements of cross-coupling coefficients under far more realistic loading conditions.

The calibrated SWIFT Evo wheel force transducer is capable of yielding data that can be shared across units with very high fidelity. This affords the flexibility to dedicate specific units for RLDA, drive file generation or durability testing, while maintaining data integrity across the process.
