Improve the longevity

As it is today, the leading edges of wind turbine rotor blades often have to be repaired due to harsh weather conditions and increased rotor speeds.

The Rain Erosion Tester from R&D Test Systems helps improve the longevity of wind turbine blades by testing erosion on the leading edges of the blades. This test system has a proven level of repeatability and fulfills DNV's Recommended Practice (DNV-RP-0171) for testing rotor blade erosion protection systems.

It is based on a 3-bladed helicopter principle with test specimens shaped like the leading edges of a standard blade or wing. This test setup ensures conditions very similar to real-life harsh weather in an accelerated way.

The Rain Erosion Tester has earned international acclaim for its reliability and documented repeatability and is widely used by leading wind turbine manufacturers and test centers. So far, 14 companies worldwide use the test system, including LM Wind Power and ORE Catapult.

R&D Test Systems offers a turnkey solution that includes the rain system, a rotor with test specimen holders, drainage, ventilation, and control system delivered in a housing of 20-foot containers.

System safety is an important parameter because it ensures safe operation during tests at extreme rotational velocities. System safety is guaranteed both by R&D Test Systems and by external machine safety specialists.

Rain erosion testing

We offer rain erosion testing for the development of features and technologies at our own rain erosion tester in Hinnerup, Denmark. The machine is equipped with a dual droplet system and can run tests at both wind and aerospace speeds.

Blade fatigue exciter

The testing solutions from R&D Test Systems enable you to verify your rotor blades according to the international standard IEC 61400-23. Being the only full-scope supplier of blade test facilities, R&D Test Systems has a unique experience within test systems for the wind industry. We have developed a Full-scale multi-axis fatigue blade test system for Blaest. "The dual-axis exciter shows good performance and the excitation method provides many opportunities, still being user-friendly. Being able to shorten the test time will be a significant improvement for our customers", says Søren Kjær Nielsen, Chief Engineer at Blaest.

FOUNDATION

We are well-versed and highly experienced in developing foundations for large-scale test systems. We are able to develop and deliver customized foundation designs which fit the requirements of the test site.

DUAL AXIS EXCITER

The Dual Axis Electrical Blade Exciter for full-scale multi-axis fatigue blade testing.

The setup consists of an electrical ground-based exciter that applies flap and edgewise loads simultaneously. This setup ensures not only that the test system applies test loads equivalent to the loads experience under operation on the turbine but also reduces the overall duration for testing of the blades.

The test system can be developed and delivered as a standard setup or customised to fit your requirements.

FLAP AND EDGE EXCITER

The fatigue test setup for accelerated lifetime testing consists of the Single Axis Flap Exciter and/or the Single Axis Edge Exciter. Both the Single Axis Flap Exciter and the Single Axis Edge Exciter can be delivered as a rotating mass exciter
and/or a ground-based exciter.

The Single Axis Flap Exciter and the Single Axis Edge Exciter can be developed and delivered as a standard setup or customised to fit your requirements.

Actuator Types:

For Quasi-Static, Pseudodynamic and Low Frequency Testing, MTS may suggest the 201 Actuator Series depending on testing needs and budgets.

•These single ended actuators are economically designed for high force compression loading with reduced tension loading and are well suited for low dynamic performance requirements. They
are normally purchased with an MTS 249 backlash free swivel joint depending on the intended applications. Actuators normally come equipped with a TEMPOSONICS® displacement sensor, 2-stage servo-valve(s), static or fatigue rated swivels, and a load cell

For Dynamic, Pseudodynamic and High Performance Testing, MTS recommends the 244 Actuator Series

These actuators are a double ended, equal area design and are recommended for almost any applications requiring high accuracy and high performance testing. Controls and Structural Testing Software

MTS controllers have been integral to civil/structural testing for decades. The controller family includes the FlexTest 200, which brings additional capacity to large structural test labs. The FlexTest 200 controller can manage up to 40 channels and 8 stations in a single chassis. These controllers are easily expandable with affordable upgrades and add-on capabilities, allowing customer’s to grow their controller as their lab grow.

MTS also offers many unique Civil/Structural software solutions.

Hybrid Simulation Method is used to combine physical testing with a structural software model.
Waveform Generation Software can be used to generate waveforms for testing structural components for seismic studies.
Run-Time Ramp Module was designed specifically for Structural Testing Laboratories that perform quasi-static testing using ramp and hold sequences.The Run-time Ramp Control process allows you to simultaneously control up to eight control channels in an incremental fashion, stepping toward indeterminate end levels. Hydraulic Distribution

For a typical Structurals Testing laboratory, the hydraulic requirements can vary considerably, but are usually on the order of 300 LPM to 1200 LPM of flow depending on the size and the charter of the laboratory. The types of testing programs will greatly influence the sizing of the distribution network.

MTS tries to work closely with our customers during the conceptual stage to determine both the immediate needs and the potential future requirements. We typically make our final recommendation based on performance requirements, anticipated needs and current budgets.

Items that are considered when designing a hardline system:

Facility issues.
Total length of the main circuit and any branch lines.
Pressure drops that will occur reducing performance levels.
Stainless steel tubing or piping routing to compliment the design of the building.
Hydraulic outlet requirements.
Hydraulic accumulation requirements.
Hydraulic power supply location and electric sizing.
Hydraulic oil cooling requirements and sizing for either air/oil or water cooling systems if required by the customer.
Hydraulic cleanliness of the oil system for maximum performance.

Reaction Walls and Portal Frames

Most large scale structural testing facilities will consist of some type of strong floor and strong wall reaction mass with a variety of portal frame components to act as secondary reaction frames for custom test configurations. The size and shape of these facilities are typically determined by the testing charter of the laboratory. For smaller scale structural testing laboratories a lower capacity strong floor or reaction bedplate is often used with portable reaction walls anchored to the bedplate.

MTS can assist you in various ways during the planning stages of a new facility or modifications to an existing building depending on the level of support that you require. We can provide simple recommendations based on our experience and the success of other laboratories doing similar types of tests or we can perform design contract studies to help conceptualize the entire project. In addition to early planning or design contract studies, MTS can provide the detailed design and documentation by a registered architectural engineering firm familiar with these types of facilities so that you can have the building constructed with your local contractor. We can assist you throughout the project from the beginning to the end
